Timeline (1906-1910):The IAAUS started in March 31st, 1906 but in 1910 the name was changed to the NCAA . The NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association.
(1917): The first National Championship was held on June 17th, 1917. The event was Men's track and field.
(1927):On November 3rd, 1927NBC Radio broadcasted the Rose Bowl. This was a major technological advancement as it was the first transcontinental radio broadcast of a sporting event. (1939):1st televised intercollegiate contest. On March 17, 1939 Princeton played against Columbia in Baseball and was aired on NBC.
(1951:)The CCNY point shaving scandal. On January 3, 1951College basketball players were involved in a point shaving gambling scandal. Most of the players involved in the scandal were from the City College of New York. (1952:) On April 3rd, 1952 the NCAA ruled that Penalties can be imposed on athletes if they violate the NCAA rules.
(1968): On July 3rd, 1968 the NCAA creates 2 divisions.
(1971): On September 15th, 1971 the Formation of Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). Women have access to compete in the championship. The AIAW coordinated 41 national championships in 19 different sports.
(1972): On August 9th, 1972 Educational Act of title IX, Women are not to be discriminated in participating in athletics.
(1975): On November 3rd, 1975 Women's athletics were originally administered by the AIAW, but now merged with the NCAA.
(1985): On August 10th, 1985 Student-athletes required to have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible to participate in college athletics.
(1986): On September 6th, 1986 the 1st drug testing program is established.
(1989): On June 19th, 1989 the Knight Foundation Commission regulates practice hours for athletes and makes changes to better the lives of Athletes.
(2008): On November 3rd, 2008 the NCAA signs deal with IMG. IMG has the right to sell marketing for 88 NCAA Championships. These packages were focused on retail promotions.
(2009): Simon- Frazier University joins the NCAA. The college is located in Burnaby, Canada... this is the first Non- United States member to join the NCAA. To see more of this timeline click here:
The NCAA has grown immensely since it started in 1906. The Sports have changed as well as the popularity of College sports. Men and Women sports have gotten so popular that paying the athletes has actually become a topic
The NCAA talks of paying their athletes has not even been an idea until now. College is making more money but then again the previous players before the idea didn't receive anything. Paying them now does not make any sense and the history of the NCAA backs this idea up.
